4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum
Ava rounds out our homeschool as the youngest one. Again this year we have one in high school, one in middle school, and one in elementary school.
As Ava gets older we still keep a more relaxed, more “unschooled” type of schedule with her than her siblings. She will often stray off onto tangents that she gets enthusiastic about so we take the time to run with those whenever we can. Despite this we keep trying to move on task with the core of her curriculum subjects.
4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum
English/Language Arts
We are continuing with the same grammar and spelling, as well as continuing to work on cursive writing skills.
- Growing with Grammar Level 4
- Soaring with Spelling Level 4
- Cursive – I haven’t yet decided if we will use some sort of cursive writing book or just practice with the everyday things we write.
Shakespeare
Shakespeare studies is something I am going to be doing with all my children this year in varying forms. I put together a unit study with resources for all levels that I will be using.
Mathematics
We are continuing with Singapore Math again this year.
Singapore Math Primary Mathematics – US Edition 4A & 4B
History/Geography
Tis’ an election year again! Each election year I try to cover American Government and the elections process with all my children. This year I will be using Uncle Sam & You for both my 7th & 4th graders.
How do elections work? What does the President do all day? Who decides where stop signs go? What is Labor Day?Uncle Sam and You is a one-year civics course that answers these questions and many more. Designed for students in grades 5 through 8, this curriculum take your student on a tour of American government. They will learn about elected leaders and everyday citizens who have important roles to fill in making our country work as well as important holidays throughout the year.
Eight works of literature are assigned in the Uncle Sam and You curriculum to give your student a richer perspective on the various topics studied. We are planning on using them as well. They are set up in such a way that the student is usually given two weeks to read each book, with 1-3 chapters assigned each day.
Science
We are going back to a unit study style approach this year. While I like the order of a curriculum, it doesn’t always suit our needs.
These are the three major units we will be covering this year:
While her brother spends time doing a more in-depth Rocks & Minerals Unit Study, she will be doing what she loves most… learning more about horses.
Music/Art
We enjoy doing art as a free flowing fun activity. For this reason we pick and choose from projects as the year progresses. We have two programs that we pick from most.
Art Programs
1. Southern Hodge Podge
We have used so many of the chalk pastel tutorials and books from Southern Hodge Podge. We plan on continuing to use these as part of our homeschool art.
Previous Pastel Projects
- A Simple Start in Christmas Chalk Pastels
- Winter Olympics Art with Chalk Pastels
- Spring Chalk Pastels Art Tutorial
2. Mixed Media Workshops
Alisha has put out these workshops for each season of the year. Each workshop consists of 20 projects with details tutorials to complete them. What is really great is that one price gets you lifetime access to the season you choose.
Music
Ava is taking piano lessons using Magic Keys, BK 1.

I assumed from the graphic that you’d be studying Shakespeare with your 4th grader – but didn’t see it mentioned in the post? Are you using a specific textbook resource or just reading together? It’s something that I’d like to start doing with my (younger) kids and was curious as to how you approach it. Thanks in advance.

Natasha, thanks for pointing that out! I put it in my 7th grade curriculum and forgot to add it to the 4th grade one. I have added it now. 🙂 And here is the link to my Shakespeare for Kids resources that I will be using this year in our homeschool: http://www.startsateight.com/2015/03/shakespeare-for-kids/

We love Singapore Math. And the Uncle Sam and You curriculum sounds like something worth investigating for the future.
