Life Skills: Using The Library – Dewey Decimal System
While we have the Internet and an endless supply of digital books, there is still something to be said for learning to navigate the library. Using the library is a life skill that can be taught to kids both young an old. The library offers an endless supply of free books to read and enjoy. As well as things like music cds, videos, magazines, and more.
Skills for using the library can be taught at a young age. You can find many books about the library to pique your child’s interest in exploring there.
Take a trip to the library today. Let your children check out some books that are just for fun, not school related.
While they do that you can find some books about the library as well as books about the Dewey Decimal System which is the system for organizing the contents of the library.
Dewey Decimal System Books
Do You Know Dewey? – Join a group of children as they explore the Dewey Decimal system! Search for ghosts in the 100s section, track down everything from costumes to cars in the 300s, and be on the lookout for sports and music in the 700s. By the end of the book, you’ll be more than ready to dive into Dewey on your own!
The Great Dewey Hunt – The Great Dewey Hunt is the third title in a series designed by author Toni Buzzeo to teach grade school children about how to use the Dewey Decimal system in a library. Led by librarian/teacher Mrs. Skorupski, second through fourth graders learn to work in teams to uncover the mysterious codes of the Dewey Decimal System. Collecting and using special objects the students pick their way through the number categories for all books filed in the library. A snag in the game helps students learn what to do when they find a misfiled book, and competition is hot to the end. Different ages are encouraged to find constructive ways to team up and work together and cooperation rules the day when the game comes to a dramatic finish with the flipping of the ten Dewey Decimal flags (with number categories 000-900) to reveal (Ta-Da!) “I Love Dewey!”
Bob The Alien Discovers The Dewey Decimal System – This is one of a series of 4 books written to help teach kids about the library. In this one Bob, who is from planet Plainold, where they have just discovered spiders travels to earth to find books about spiders because planet Plainold doesn’t have books. Join Allison Wonderland as she teaches Bob how to use the Dewey Decimal System to find books about spiders and much more!
The Dewey Decimal System (A True Book) – This book is great for older students looking to learn about the Dewey Decimal System. It is all the facts and information, without the picture book style story.
Fiction vs. Non-Fiction
Then when you are at home take some time to discuss how books are organized in the library. The fiction is in one section, and the non-fiction is in another.
Fiction – Fiction books are entertaining, make-believe stories that are not real. The fiction books are arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name.
Non-Fiction – Non-fiction books give your true information and facts to explain something. The non-fiction books are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal System.
