Spanish for Kids: A Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids® Review
Did you know that most colleges want to see two years of a foreign language on your high school transcript? Did you also know that the younger you introduce a language the easier it is for kids to learn? For these very reasons I have spent a great deal of time throughout our homeschooling years searching for Spanish for Kids. Getting them started early can be the key to their success in high school!
One of the ways we have found to be successful for teaching a myriad of things to our children including math, history, and yes, Spanish for kids is through music. I think one of the reasons this method works so well is because of the immersion experience you get with learning things via song. Immersion is an especially important component when learning a new language, in fact, that is how we all learn our primary language!
Spanish for Kids Video Lessons
Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids® is an interactive, immersion foreign language program for kids. The video lessons are of children acting out everyday situations while all the speech is in Spanish. Not only are your children getting full immersion with watching and listening to the children on screen interact, but the words are also put up on the screen in written form so your child can associate the sound with the look of the written word.

At the end of each video segment there is a brief quiz in which the student is asked to identify vocabulary. If they miss a question on the quiz they can immediately view the explanation of the correct answer, giving them immediate feedback.
There are 8 Levels of the Spanish program. Each of them includes:
- Video Lessons
- Rapid Review Challenge
- Listening and Reading Quizzes
- Workbook Activities – both Language and Culture/Geography
- Squisher Comic – which is a comic teaching culture and language in narrative form.
Features of Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids®
Beyond the online or DVD based video lessons, Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids® Spanish includes some extra features to enhance your child’s learning by making it more hands-on and fun to interact with the Spanish vocabulary they are learning.
Teacher’s Guides
While this feature isn’t for the kids, it’s something us moms need and want! The corresponding Teacher Guides for each level include step-by-step detailed lessons plans, including all the vocabulary being taught, which videos your child needs to watch, and even multiple optional hands-on activities to correspond with the lessons.
Student Workbooks
There is a student workbook for each of the levels that is meant to reinforce and expand on what the kids are learning in the videos. Each workbook offers language activities such as crosswords, word finds, creating restaurant menus and more. There is also a Culture and Geography section about different Spanish-Speaking Countries. This includes things like geography facts, fun cultural facts and more.
Rapid Review
The Rapid Review Challenges are the last video on each level. They are a race against the clock for your kids to call out the Spanish words before they appear on the screen. (My kids love racing each other to name the word as well.) It is suggested that since the videos in the program build on each other that your students can call out at least 90% of the words before advancing to the next level.
This is a great way for parents to easily measure their child’s progress. If they cannot complete at least 90% then you can go back and watch the videos again, review the flash cards/play games with them, and even do some of the worksheets again until they are competent in the rapid review section.
Flashcards/Card Games
Each level has a corresponding deck of cards with which you can use as flashcards, or play one of the many games they have included in the Cards for Kids by Kids Card Game book. The cards are similar to the quality of a deck of playing cards which means they are durable and should last through many hours of use. We enjoy playing a variation on memory where you match the image card with the correct word card.
Word Stickers
My daughter really enjoyed having the stickers. We took some time to have her identify the words on each of the stickers. She then gathered the items to label and placed them back around the house. Having the items labeled around the house makes it easy for her to review the words naturally as she passes by them each day.
Benefits of Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids®
1. Versatile Learning for Multiple Ages
When asked if their program can be used for multiple ages, this is what Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids® had to say:
“Absolutely. One of the wonderful benefits of this program is that your children can all do their lessons together, no matter what their ages. You may need to choose different supplements for your children depending on their ages, but the core video program will work for everyone. We have heard from some parents that their high school students resist doing the program at first, complaining it is too juvenile for them, but soon they realize how fast they are learning and that this is a fun way of learning.”
We definitely found this to be true in our house. Even though the videos seemed a little juvenile to my high school aged son, he has listened along with us and even learned a few things along the way (he is already taking a different Spanish course this year so much of it made for good review). Plus hearing the words used fluently in conversation style was really great for both him!
2. Not Overly Time Consuming
You have the option to simply watch the videos and do the Rapid Review Challenges. That means your children can learn Spanish in as little as 15 minutes twice a week! Want to do more? No problem! The Teacher’s Guide gives more activities for each lesson and even lists an approximate time that it will take to complete each lesson!
3. For Kids by Kids
The actors in the videos are kids, doing kid things. They are fun and silly sometimes making them relatable for your kids.
4. Rewatch Videos
Not only can they easily go back and rewatch videos, but they are encouraged to! Going back helps to reinforce the vocabulary and allows them time to pick up on the pronunciation and nuances of speaking Spanish.
Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids® makes it easy for parents to offer a complete Spanish for kids immersion experience with ease as well as making it fun and engaging for the kids!
