As Waters Gone By Book Review
How can a marriage survive when separated by hundreds of miles and impenetrable prison walls? Find out how Emmalyn and Max Ross fair in Cynthia Ruchti’s new book, as waters gone by.
About As Waters Gone By
Emmalyn and Max Ross may have to endure the fight of their lives to mend the tattered fabric of their marriage. His actions ensured she could never be a mother and put him in prison, giving their relationship a court-mandated five-year time-out. On a self-imposed exile to beautiful but remote Madeline Island, one of the Apostle Islands of Lake Superior, Emmalyn has just a few months left to figure out if and how they can ever be a couple again.
Nudged along by the exuberant owner of the Wild Iris Inn and Café, a circle of misfit people in their small town, and a young girl who desperately needs someone to love her, Emmalyn restores an island cottage that could become a home and begins to restore her heart by learning what it means to love unconditionally. Yet even as hope begins to find a place within the cottage walls, Emmalyn still wonders if she’s ready for Max’s release. She may be able to rebuild a cottage, but can she rebuild a marriage?

What I Thought
First of all I just need to say how much I LOVE the setting of this book! I want to rush right out and travel to Madeline Island! It felt remote, quaint, beautiful, and incredibly peaceful! Of course that could have been (and I am sure was) partly due to the depth of warmth and life and the cast of characters in as waters gone by.
Boozie and Cora, Nick and Dog all play a special role in Emmalyn’s transition from thwarted and isolated prison wife, to confident, healing, loving mother and wife. With their special quirks and unexpected kindnesses you feel a sort of healing in your own soul as you ride the waves of Boozie back sided wisdom, and Cora’s steadfast commitment despite her situation.
While I expected certain outcomes from this book (Emmalyn and Max to work through things and be together), I did not expect the journey that got her there. I loved the unexpected obstacles and the surprise twist (I won’t spoil it). Now having read it I can’t imagine her story being fulfilled in any other way!
This is a great read about staying power, communication, love, forgiveness, and healing!
