Title: How To Be God’s Little Princess
Author: Sheila Walsh
Copyright: 2010, published by Tommy Nelson
Summary and Thoughts: This book for young girls ages 8-12 is chocked full of practical advice, from hair and nails, to having parties, being a good friend, and learning to know and like you for you! Sheila gives solid advice as well as fun, hands on activities for young girls. Things like how to make hair accessories, decorate your nails, create good party invitations and so much more. Your daughter can learn to pour tea, have good table manners, throw a fun party, and even have proper phone etiquette, all while having fun!
Sheila starts right out winning bonus points with me as a parent for encouraging the girls to consult their “royal advisers” She says,
“You have royal advisers too. Your advisers might be your mother or dad, or a grandmother or aunt, or all of them-seek out your royal advisers for answers.“
Add to that the fact that it is hard not to fall in love with Sheila’s witty style of writing, and you have a winning combination of endearing wit and sound wisdom for young girls! What little girl does not love princesses and wouldn’t love being reassured that she is a princess just the way she is! It is easy to see why girls relate to her.
I also love her many choices of solid, practical tidbits of wisdom taken from the Bible. I feel it is especially important to make your advice and insights easily relatable for children. They do not posses the ability to make inferences and connections as an adult would. Sheila lays everything out in plain, easy to understand terms. For instance she quotes:
“Who is that young woman? She shines out like the dawn. She’s as pretty as the moon. She’s as bright as the sun…” -Song of Solomon 6:10
~
“Believe in the value of wisdom, and it will make you great. Use it and it will bring honor to you. Like flowers in your hair, it will beautify your life. Like a crown, it will make you beautiful.” – Proverbs 4:8-9
~
“You are young, but do not let anyone treat you as if you were not important. Be an example to show the believers how they should live. Show them with your words, with the way you live, with your love, with your faith, and with your pure life.” 1 Timothy 4:12
~
“Always be happy.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16
~
“There is a right time for everything. Everything on earth has its special season.” Ecclesiastes 3:1
My daughter and I also enjoyed reading the quizzes and answering the questions for each other. Some of the choices made us laugh out loud, others brought about great conversations about what choices to make in situations and how sometimes it isn’t always easy to choose. It was a great, light-hearted way to have conversations with my daughter that I might not have had otherwise. I enjoyed hearing how she felt about certain issues and listening to her talk of similar situations in her life.

What My 11 Year Old Had To Say:
WHAT I LIKED: I liked the crafts and how-tos that gave me specific ideas and directions for crafts and activities. I also liked the different outfit ideas; for instance, how she recommends that you DO NOT put a pattern over a pattern. The book gives you cool ways to get organized; like making an awesome pie chart! Sheila gives you ideas on how to be a peacemaker between you and your siblings and avoid a fight. I also liked how she gave ideas on how to plan a perfect party.
WHAT I THINK SHE SHOULD HAVE SAID MORE ABOUT: I think she should have written more about being organized and using your time wisely. That would have helped me a lot, because sometimes I waste my time doing NOTHING!!! 🙂
WHAT I LEARNED: I learned that a “PRINCESS” needs to have good manners, be kind to family and friends, and choose the right outfit for the activity she is going to do.
