About the book:
A storm the size of Texas brews when Gloria Powell and Kai Chang meet in a Ft. Worth hotel. They have come to discuss the future of Lily, the daughter Gloria adopted from China and the sister Kai hopes to reclaim. Kai is a doctor who had to give up her little sister during the Cultural Revolution and has since discovered that an inherited genetic defect may be waiting to fatally strike Lily.
Gloria’s relationship with her daughter is tattered and strained, and the arrival of Kai, despite the woman’s apparent good intentions, makes Gloria fearful. Gloria longs to restore her relationship with Lily, but in the wake of this potentially devastating diagnosis, is Kai an answer to prayer, or will her arrival force Gloria to sacrifice more than she ever imagined?

What I Thought:
This is my first Patti Lacy book, but I have heard many good things about her work. Reclaiming Lily did not disappoint. We first meet Gloria Powell who has always wanted a child. After jumping through hoops, red tape, and a long wait, she and her husband Andrew make a trip from their home in Texas to China, where their a baby is waiting for them. Much to their dismay, when they arrive in China the promised baby isn’t there. Instead they see a child, a young girl and Gloria instantly knows its the child God intended for them. They take her home to Texas and rename her Joy, for all the joy she brings to them. Their sweet Joy grows into a rebellious teen who struggles with a feeling of emptiness as well as the negativeness of others, due to being a “foreigner” in their world.
On the other side of the story there is Kai. Kai is the older sister of Joy, who was born Lily. Kai who made a death bed promise to her mother in China to reclaim the sister that had been taken to the orphanage. Kai now works in the states as a doctor and becomes determined to find her sister, not only to fulfill the wish she made to her mother, but also because there could be a genetic issue that affects Lily (Joy).
Two worlds and two cultures collide as the Powell’s and Kai stumble through trying to come together to do what is best for Joy (Lily). Gloria the overprotective mother, Kai the calm, controlled doctor, and Andrew who keeps them all together. Patti Lacy takes fact and makes it come alive through deep, rich characters and the intricate weaving of lives and stories. A fascinating look into China’s culture and the world of of foreign adoption. As well as testament to the strength of family and the ties that bind us together.
