Homeschool High School Writing Skills Curriculum
My two oldest children were not fond of writing in their younger years. In fact, it was such a struggle with my oldest that I gave up on any formal writing requirements until high school (and she is graduating college this year). With my second I only waited until middle school because he wasn’t even doing any “just for fun” writing and I wanted to be sure he had a solid grasp of the skills.
When I first saw Paradigm English Curriculum, and more specifically their writing curriculum, I wondered if they could do a solid job of it within their no muss no fuss format that we love so much. I am pleased to say the answer is yes!
Paradigm Accelerated English III: Writing Skills curriculum (like their other programs) is broken down into 3 parts: The Student Text, The Activity Books, and the Teacher’s Resource Kit.
“English III: Writing Skills is part of a continuous high school English curricula designed to prepare eleventh grade students for post-high school studies and careers which require strong reading and writing skills. This third of a four-level series builds strong writing skills needed for college and careers.”
With that being said, we were able to pick up with this third portion, having not done the previous ones, with no problem. They recommended that if your student struggles with English III then you should have them go back to English I or English II.
Benefits of PAC Homeschool High School Writing Skills Curriculum
Affordable
At $95.95 being the most expensive option (the FULL Print version), with the full digital version at less than half that cost, Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum is very affordable.
We have found that we prefer to purchase the digital curriculum so we can print it and have it spiral bound for ease of use. (You can see how we did that here, only in that instance we had the print copy and had to cut it apart which is more expensive and time consuming than ordering the digital version.)
Easy to Implement
In this curriculum students often read excepts from many genres including historical pieces, poetry and more. They learn techniques, step by step, for producing poems, letters, essays, narratives, editorials, articles, speeches, allegories, and research papers of their own.
The Student Text is broken down into Chapters, Sections, and Lessons. This makes each section and step a manageable amount of work, especially for a kid like mine who wants to work through it at his own pace (which means the fastest pace he can manage).
I like the extensive amount of vocabulary and examples that are given. We even chose to read some of the books based on the excerpts that were given in the student text!
Skills Based
Students gain experience writing pieces that inform, entertain, persuade and challenge. They learn to address literary concepts such as cause and effect, logic, premises, comparison, and contrasts.
Each lesson includes Highlighted Vocabulary that id defined for the student and then covered on the tests to help reinforce it. Each new writing concept, such as summarizing, is not only explained and defined, but there are examples from real life writing so the student can see how it is accomplished in a real world setting.
Teachers Resource Kit
Included in the Teacher’s Resource Kit is:
- Table of Contents for Textbooks
- Activity Book Answer Key (Including details and resources for grading their writing)
- 15 Section Quizzes
- 5 Chapter Tests
- Quiz and Chapter Test Answer Keys
This kit makes it easy to check your students work, evaluate their writing, and administer both Section Quizzes and Chapter Tests.
If you are looking for an easy to implement, affordable homeschool high school writing program and your student enjoys being able to work independently and at their own pace, then the Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum’s English III: Writing Skills (really the entire English program) might be a good fit for you!

Is This Program Secular?
Paradigm’s curriculum is not considered to be a Christian curriculum (which can be a plus for secular homeschoolers), but they do consider their curriculum to be “virtue based”, and “teach the historical role of religion in America’s history” (which can be a plus for Christian homeschoolers).
“We adhere to government guidelines regarding the use of religion in our curriculum, and in the eyes of the government, we are secular, and government funds can be used to purchase our curriculum for use in public institutions. However, most of our curriculum was authored by Christians. The curriculum is more “virtue-based” in which it tries to help build good moral character in students by exposing them to positive role models, positive quotes, and values based on Judeo-Christian principles.”
You can read more about the secular vs. sectarian debate, and where PAC feels they land here: Secular vs. Sectarian, and then decide for your own family how/if this curriculum will meet your personal needs.

I was wondering how long each lesson takes. Did your high schooler enjoy the assignments?

Robin, it really depends on whether it is a longer paper writing assignment or more of the read and multiple choice, fill in the blank type of assignment. Writing is not his favorite but he likes this because there are very clear start and end points for each assignment. He doesn’t love it when there are too many open ended assignments or a ton of choices as to what to write about.

Hello, I have an upcoming 9th grader and I’m looking at this curriculum. Would English 3 be appropriate for a student who has a good handle on grammar type stuff which looks like 1-2 have mostly that. I think she’s ready for more of the writing skills.

While I can speak to your child’s skill specifically, even with good grammar you might want to start with II in this series as a solid building block to III. If you haven’t yet I would look at the scope and sequence for all of them, as well as the sample lessons to help you make a decision as to which level you think is best for your child.
