Life Skills as High School Electives: Home Economics and Shop Class
One of the most important subjects in your child’s education are those things that fall under the category of “life-skills”. Many of these skills used to be taught in Home Economics and Shop Class, but seem to have fallen by the wayside in lieu of things like standardized testing. Teaching Life Skills as High School Electives is a great way to ensure your kids have the skills they need and earn high school credit for learning them!
One of the many advantages of homeschooling includes being able to be sure to cover these life skills topics. If you haven’t already included many of these in your daily lives, no worries! There is no time like the present to start doing them!
Life Skills as High School Electives: Home Economics and Shop Class
Welcome to my series Life Skills as High School Electives: Home Economics and Shop Class. Over the course of this series I will be talking about essential life skills and how to incorporate them into your high school transcript as high school electives. {Each topic will be linked here as they are completed.}
I have broken essential life skills down into two main categories: Home Economics and Shop Class. Then I have further broken each of them down into bite-sized chunks for ease of use. I will give you lists of ideas for covering each topic, as well as resources for learning and teaching each skill to your kids.
Be sure to book mark this page as this is the landing page for all of them!
1. Home Economics
- Essentials for Stocking a Kitchen & Pantry
- Cooking Basics for Teens
- Sewing Basics for Teens
- Laundry & Clothing Tips
- house cleaning
2. Shop Class
- Essential Household Repair Tool Kit
- Basic Household Repairs for Teens
- Basic Wood Working Projects
- plumbing and electrical
- mechanical
Each of these larger subjects (Home Economics & Shop Class) contain not only essential life skills, but also double as quality high school elective credits. You could easily give half a credit during a semester (or two) for working your way through these life skills as high school electives.
To make things easier I have provided not only specific tasks under each life skill for your teens to learn and accomplish, but I have created a useful printable list for each life skill topic that is easy to date and check off for your homeschool record keeping!

You seem to have completely left the “economics” out of home economics. When I took HE in junior high, it started with an entire month on topics such as budgeting, debt and interest rates, marketing and advertising, smart consumerism, false advertising, and investing. We even made up mock portfolios and “shopped” for apartments and houses. We also completed a 1040EZ or 1040A based upon an income we were assigned and our budgets.

When I was in school, and still today in NYS, Economics is a completely separate class from Home Ec. Economics is a required course in high school that is often half a year and paired with a United States Government course for the other half of that year. You can find an Easy to Implement Economics course here: http://www.startsateight.com/high-school-economics/ and lots of ideas for money management and money sense here: http://www.startsateight.com/money-management-for-teens/

Not ECONOMICS. Not stuff like cattle futures and supply chain management. HOME ECONOMICS. As in the things that a housewife needs to know about money to manage a home well.
