You seem to have completely left the “economics” out of home economics. When I took HE in junior high, it started with an entire month on topics such as budgeting, debt and interest rates, marketing and advertising, smart consumerism, false advertising, and investing. We even made up mock portfolios and “shopped” for apartments and houses. We also completed a 1040EZ or 1040A based upon an income we were assigned and our budgets.

When I was in school, and still today in NYS, Economics is a completely separate class from Home Ec. Economics is a required course in high school that is often half a year and paired with a United States Government course for the other half of that year. You can find an Easy to Implement Economics course here: http://www.startsateight.com/high-school-economics/ and lots of ideas for money management and money sense here: http://www.startsateight.com/money-management-for-teens/

Not ECONOMICS. Not stuff like cattle futures and supply chain management. HOME ECONOMICS. As in the things that a housewife needs to know about money to manage a home well.
