Middle School History Homeschool Curriculum
With middle school comes a higher expectation of content and understanding. It is a shift from the grammar to logic stage in development. For us that means more depth of knowledge and understanding is expected. With this comes the need for quality homeschool curriculum. For this reason I am excited to have the opportunity to try the new Masterbooks Middle School History Homeschool Curriculum!
Disclosure: I was sponsored by Masterbooks to review their Jr. High Studies in World History homeschool curriculum and am excited to share my experience as well as an awesome giveaway! All opinion are mine alone. For more information please read my full disclosure.
Masterbooks offers an extensive line of Homeschool Curriculum from preschool through high school. We have had the opportunity to review their Studies in World History, Volume 1. This is a full year World History Homeschool Curriculum for middle school. From Masterbooks website:
This is a comprehensive examination of history, geography, religion, economics, and government systems. This educational program equips students to learn from the starting point of God’s creation of the world and move forward with a solid Biblically based worldview.
Masterbooks Studies in World History Homeschool Curriculum
The challenge with my current middle school student is that his attention span is pretty short (unless he is playing a video game!). Thus getting too time intensive can be an issue for him. For this reason I love that the Masterbooks Studies in World History Homeschool Curriculum is deliberately set up in short time increments. This curriculum is set up with 34 chapters that are meant to span 34 weeks. Each chapter has five short lessons that include a brief reading followed by discussion questions. This means that my middle schooler can accomplish his history in just 30 minutes each day!
At the beginning of each of the 34 chapters is a paged containing the Chapter Learning Objectives and a Concepts List. I love these features because I can see it at quick glance what key things to be thinking about and asking my son about throughout the week.
Along with the student volume you can purchase the Teacher Guide.
The Teacher Guide Includes:
- answer keys to the daily discussion questions
- a daily calendar/checklist for assignments and grading
- worksheets for the discussion questions
- weekly exams
As you can see in the photo above I put the Suggested Daily Schedule in a 3 ring binder. Then I added the Student Worksheets. This allows my son to have it all in one place. He can see when assignments are due, check them off when they are done, and then I can insert a grade when I have reviewed them. This is a great way to keep everything organized and together!
The Chapter Tests included in the Teacher Guide have 2 options: one is a fill in the blank and one similiar to the daily discussion questions where a hand written response is required. I like that there is an option. After doing the writing throughout the week I like to use the fill in the blank both as a change of pace, and as another way for my son to present his knowledge of the material he has covered.
