Social and Emotional Learning with HeyKiddo Huddle
The reasons why we homeschool encompass more than just academics. Building good relationships with our kids, so we can help them with social and emotional learning is important too. Building things like interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, and self-awareness will build emotional wellness in our children for a lifetime.

5 Social Emotional Categories
The HeyKiddo Huddle program is broken down into 5 categories, covered over 36 weeks. In just 15 minutes a day, facilitate daily conversations and engage in creative activities that adjust to each child’s personalized needs.
1. Self-Awareness – This section includes things to help children identify their emotions, thoughts, and values and notice how they influence their behavior. Answering such questions as, How am I Feeling? and When am I most confident?
2. Self-Management – This section is designed to help children manage their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different contexts. Answering such questions as, How can I control my actions? What does my stress look like? and How can I stay focused?
3. Responsible Decision Making – This section will help children make thoughtful choices about their behavior. Answering such questions as How do I analyze information? How do I handle conflict? and How can I learn from the past?
4. Social Awareness – To help children see and empathize with another’s perspective and understand how it compares to theirs. Answering such questions as, Am I aware of the world around me? What would it feel like to be someone else? and How can I appreciate differences?
5. Relationship Skills – This final section will help children establish and maintain healthy relationships wit others. Answering such questions as, What makes me a good communicator? Am I a team player? and How can I overcome obstacles?
HeyKiddo in Action
To give you an idea of what a week of HeyKiddo Huddle is like I’m using Week 3: How am I feeling? (from the Self-Awareness Module) as an example. This is representative of the way most of the weeks are set up, with two major components: Creative Activity and Daily Conversation Starters.
1. Creative Activity
The Creative Activity is designed to get kids comfortable with identifying and expressing what they are feeling.
This was a fun week because we got to play around with making faces to match emotions. It really got my grandson thinking about looking at people, observing their faces, to help him decide how they were feeling. Reading people is an important skill you will need your whole life.
I love how we can incorporate things like this into our daily lives – not that we couldn’t without HeyKiddo Huddle, but it’s nice that HeyKiddo lays it all out for you, helping to ensure you are thinking of all the social/emotional nuances you would want to talk about and work on with your kids.
2. Daily Conversation Starters
Then you are supplied with 5 conversation starters to use with your kids – one for each of the 5 days of the week. These Daily Conversation Starters help them learn more about common emotions, what they are feeling, and ways that emotions are expressed physically. You can use these in various ways such as discussion prompts or journal starters – or both!
We often have discussions causally in the car, over dinner, or while playing a game together. It makes it feel more natural and less of a forced activity.
