Weekly Wrap-Up ~ New puppy, Layers of the Earth
Monday: This started out as any other ordinary week. We went to the Strong National Museum of Play in the morning. Then music lessons from 2-3pm. This was Jayden’s 2nd lesson from Mike and it went very well. Jayden’s “gaming fingers” make him a natural at the piano. There has been talk of Chloe wanting to play the guitar. I have considered asking Mike if he would be willing to spend a small portion of her violin lessons teaching her a few basics on the guitar. That, of course, would require us to own one for her to practice on at home!
Tuesday: Most of our academics went by the wayside today. We drove over an hour in one direction to look at puppies. Chloe has been saving her money to buy a puppy because I told her I might consider it, but she had to contribute to the cost of buying, vet bills, food etc. for the new puppy. There were 3 puppies to choose from: one Cairn Yorkshire mix, and two Bichon brothers. The terrier was too high strung for our house, but the 2 Bichon’s were so lovable! We ending up choosing our little 5.4lb Oscar because he has a very calm personality and even though we loved his brother too, his brother was more than double his size! Oscar must have been the runt of the litter!
Thursday: We are learning about our solar system in science. This week is about earth and it’s layers. We had 2 different science experiments (more like projects) this week. We cut open an apple for the first one and talked about the skin representing the crust, the main part of the apple as the mantle, and the core of the apple as the core of the earth.
Today was our second project which is titled “Five Layer Earth Cookies”. Using a one quart jar we created the layers of the earth with ingredients for our cookies. Here’s how it goes:
Sugar = Earth’s Inner Core
Brown Sugar = Earth’s Outer Core
M & M’s = the Mantle of the Earth
Chocolate Chips = the Earth’s Crust
Flour, Baking Powder & Salt = the Earth’s Atmosphere
Friday: In usual form we are ending the week on a lighter note. We are finishing our weekly spelling, daily math, and maybe we will get to Shakespeare today! This week has been a little topsy – turvy due to the addition of Oscar, but all in all it was a fun week.

Congrats on the new puppy! We got our puppy back in March, and he has certainly changed the way we do things around here. 🙂 I love the cookie ingredients jar for explaining the earth.

Loved the clever way of demonstrating the layers of the earth. Thanks for inviting me along to choose the puppy. Thoroughly enjoyed the day!!! Oscar is sooooo adorable and it ws delightful when my dog, Roxie got together with Oscar playfully chasing one another on Friday.
