Simple Woman’s Daybook ~ February 23, 2010
FOR TODAY:
Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010…
Outside my window…the fresh snow has fallen and made a new blanket of white. The kids are looking forward to getting out and possibly building another snowman.
I am thinking…about teaching and learning. I worry about my skills as a home school parent/teacher. Sometimes my role as both parent and teacher can feel overwhelming.
I am thankful for…the never ending support of my husband. He is always there to say a positive word or to lend a hand when I feel I am falling short.
From the learning rooms…we are surrounded by the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Loved watching Sean White, Apolo Ohno, Lindsey Vonn, the first ever Olympic Ski Cross and so much more.
From the kitchen…since tonight is our only night home as a family, Joey will be making french toast for dinner. Breakfast food for dinner is always a big hit in our house.
I am wearing…pjs but will be quickly changing so I can get Ava to preschool.
I am creating…my 5″x5″ squares for our Lap Blanket project . In two weeks I have completed 11 squares. It doesn’t sound like much, but it is a great accomplishment for me. Chloe has finished one usable square and her first one was a little small and a little shabby so we threw it out.
I am going…to be doing a little birthday shopping with my mom today. New clothes always lift the spirit!
I am reading…Gone with the Wind still. Although I am almost 400 pages in now. I find myself irritated when I get interrupted and have to stop because I am enjoying it so much!
I am hoping…to find the time to organize my desk again. There is so much filing stack up and clutter to be cleared.
I am hearing…nothing. Ahhh the sounds of sleeping children. Oh, I do however hear our dog, Muffin, licking herself at my feet!
Around the house…there are many new light fixtures. We recently added on in the bathroom and Jayden’s room. We replaced the ancient ceiling fan in the home school room and added a light over the home school table. Joey and my father finished installing 12 recessed lights in the basement with 4 more to go.
One of my favorite things…the feeling of accomplishment, big or small. To set a goal, work at it, and complete it the way you planned brings a feeling of pride and satisfaction in a personal accomplishment. Even just finishing my first 5×5 square for our blanket project 2 weeks back brought a feeling of success and completion.
A few plans for the rest of the week: Preschool taxi driver, ice skating, a much needed Walk and Talk with Shana, Chloe’s Early States Gymnastics Competition on Saturday, my birthday, much anticipated work on finishing the basement for my husband.
Here is the picture for thought I am sharing…

i know the feeling of being overwhelmed by the role of parent and teacher… though sometimes I feel it’s one and the same thing. Maybe it’s better to be concerned and thereby make the effort to concentrated on doing a good job, than to think you’re dong fine when you’re not! I hope you will have a good week.

You sound like you could use our Walk ‘N Talk as much as I can! Hang in there and know that you ARE doing a fantastic job! It’s a job I couldn’t do and you make it LOOK easy! I agree with Felicity above…it’s better to consciously be aware of how your doing – rather than take for granted that everything is going fine. It’s a natural checks and balances and keeps you challenged to do the best you can.

Who was the famous person that said, “Know thy self”?
Seeing the picture of Joey and my husband brings to mind how wonderful it has been to watch/see Toni speaking into Joey’s life lilke a father. One way has been through teaching, sharing the knowledge he has of how to use specific tools to build or repair things.
