5 Study Tips That Will Help You Learn More Effectively
If you are serious about your studies then you will want to do everything you can to get the most out of your education. Learning is a huge investment of your time and money, commit to making the most out of your studies and use these five study tips to help you maximize your learning experience.
1. Determine Your Learning Style
There are visual learners and verbal learners, active learners versus reflective learners, practical learners versus intuitive learners, and sequential learners versus global learners. An online survey can help you determine your learning style and adjust your study habits accordingly. Once you realize which learning style you have, use that to your advantage and start applying the skills you know will be effective for your specific learning style.
2. Establish a Regular Study Regimen
It is beneficial to most students to establish a set time and place to study each week and to tell your family or friends not to bother you during that time. An uncluttered desk where you can spread out your textbook and notes will help you to focus on your studies. This will place your mind into work mode and help keep distractions from cluttering your mind, thus making you more able to work hard and retain more.
3. Avoid Distractions
After you have set up a regimented time to study, it is important that you are able to focus during that time. Either turn off your devices such as phones or leave them in another room where you won’t hear them ding and beep for every notification, and turn off computer notifications so they won’t distract you from the task at hand. Tell your family and others that you are unreachable and keep in mind what is important. Once distractions are out of the way, remember how you learn best and create an environment that helps you retain all of the material you just went over.
4. Use the Right Tools at Home
- When you study you might want a good laptop computer or tablet on which to take notes, do research, and access any online tools you may need.
- You will also want a good reading lamp on your desk or proper lighting in the room to reduce strain on your eyes.
- Having a planner to organize your time both for short term and long term tasks and goals is an important tool for your learning and life journey.
- If you are studying biology, you might consider investing in a pc compatible digital microscope. This way you can photograph samples under the microscope and transfer them directly to your computer for later study.
- No matter what your tool might be, evaluate what gadgets will help you the most and make the investment in those tools.
5. Set Career Goals
Think of the donkey with the fishing pole over his shoulder from which dangles a carrot. He keeps walking forward because he wants that carrot. Your career goals can be that carrot. An example might be “I have to stick to this because I will need this information in my future career.” When you make the goal be sure it is measurable and time sensitive to ensure it is accomplished.
Often setting smaller, more bite sized goals that lead up to one large goal can make it seem more attainable. For instance, if your goal is to graduate from high school then you would lay out a 4 Year High School Plan that breaks down that larger goal into the 4 separate years to make it more attainable and seem like less of an unmanageable task.
These five study tips may help you to maximize your learning experience, but it will ultimately be up to you and how hard you decide to work. Utilize the resources you have in front of you and you will see the results you are looking for.
