Homeschool Friendly Mystery Movie
While homeschooling is much more popular than it used to be, it still takes a back seat to public school. It can be hard to find books and movies that our kids can relate to.
While I have found Books That Feature Homeschoolers, I haven’t found many movies that do. But I was recently introduced to a homeschool friendly mystery movie I want to tell you about!
Homeschool Friendly Mystery Movie
Mount Hideaway Mysteries: Exes and Oh No’s from Mount Hideaway Media is a homeschool friendly mystery movie created by a homeschool dad and homeschool grads.

About Mount Hideaway Mysteries: Exes and Oh No’s
Bethany Shanholtz, a beautiful young government operative, moves back to her rural hometown to get away from the spy life. But townspeople start getting murdered and her government bosses convince her to investigate, unofficially. She’s not allowed to use agency resources so she calls upon local friends from her childhood as a homeschooled farm girl.
The investigation quickly leads to Bethany’s ex-boyfriend Jamie and the mystery surrounding his sister’s mysterious death many years ago. The closer Bethany gets to the answers, the more the murders seem to be related to her own past, and the town’s future.
AND JUST WAIT FOR THE ENDING! While I won’t spoil the surprise it does leave you wanting more! (#plottwist)
Reasons to Love This Homeschool Friendly Mystery Movie
1. Created by Homeschoolers
Mount Hideaway’s Writer/Director, Brett Monk is a homeschooling dad. Brett and his wife Leigh Anne adopted their daughter out of the foster care system at age 13, while the movie was being created.
Making movies with her dad and her “movie crew family” is now part of her homeschool education and vocational training.
Producer/Co-Writer and Lead Actor, Mikayla Mulgrew Leybovich, is a homeschool grad. Co-Star Stacey Bradshaw (“Touched by Grace”, “Unplanned”, “Vindication”) and MANY of the cast and crew members are also homeschooled/homeschool graduates.
You can learn more about the cast and crew as well as the movie by visiting the site here.
2. Family Friendly
While the recommend movie age is 12+ because of the murder plot, we found it to be incredibly family friendly and tastefully done, even for younger audiences (if parents screen and approve).
It was refreshing to find an entertaining movie free of gratuitous profanity, gore, or sexual situations.
While this is a murder mystery and romance story, the romance is presented minus steamy scenes and all fight scenes and references to murders are done in an understated way (you don’t see any gore), similar to classic TV mysteries from years ago.
3. Quality Characters
Mount Hideaway Mysteries: Exes and Oh No’s uses real people as characters, not Hollywood actors.
It’s so nice to see a film where every face isn’t perfectly made up and every figure isn’t perfect. My husband and I always comment on the “pretty people” in movies and shows. These characters were so refreshing and easy to identify with.
4. Pro Parents
Often times the parents in movies and shows are portrayed as incompetent or silly. In Mount Hideaway, the parental characters are sharp and relevant.
Bethany’s mom has advanced degrees and is wise, kind, and tough. She runs a successful family orchard.
Amy’s dad is super smart and leads the Homeschool Co-op Criminal Science Club. He was hilariously “dad-like” int he beginning scenes! My kids could really relate to him as his sense of humor is not unlike their dad’s.
5. Pro Homeschooling
All throughout the movie there are references to homeschooling. Whether that be talk of co-ops, the flexibility of scheduling, homeschool PE and more.
Instead of making fun of homeschooling, or portraying homeschoolers as odd social outcasts, this homeschool friendly mystery movie portrays homeschoolers as smart, and homeschooling is a valid choice for families.
