Homeschool High School Biology with Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum

I have always loved biology. It was my favorite subject in high school. Dissections were something I looked forward to and enjoyed. That being said not everyone is as enthusiastic as I am about biology. Nor as comfortable with the subject as I am.

What I have found throughout my years of homeschooling is that just because you aren’t comfortable with a subject, doesn’t mean you can’t teach it in your homeschool. There are so many options out there for teachers and learners of all shapes and sizes.

Over the years I have had the opportunity to use multiple Homeschool High School Biology curricula. As with any subject what works for one child might not work for another. We have used anything from really in-depth multiple resource lab intensive options to online options with virtual labs, and even sciences without labs. {Yes you can do science without labs.}

Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum is one company that offers a homeschool high school biology option. In addition they also offer courses in other sciences, social studies, math, English, and even electives for grades 7-12.

Homeschool High School Biology with Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum

Principles, Theories, and Precepts of Biology from Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum is a high school level biology program that may be completed under the guidance of a teacher/parent, or through guided independent study with minimum student dependence on the teacher/parent.

Throughout our years of homeschooling we have used a few course from Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum including World History, Economics, and English Writing. I have always found them easy to use, whether you have a student who needs direct supervision or one who learns very independently.

This biology course is equal to one high school transcript credit for students who complete the 90 lessons, 18 quizzes, and/or six chapter tests.

As a bonus to the student, “if you score 85% or higher on the three section quizzes for each chapter, then you may be exempt from the chapter test!” This is something that they suggest as an option for your student. It can be a great incentive for them to be diligent about their section quizzes so they can skip the chapter test if they do well!

Laboratory experiments (actual or observations) may be added as needed to earn lab transcript credit.

**A Note About Labs – This biology course does not include labs, but they can easily be added if you desire the experience or the credits. Here is a site I found with FREE Biology Experiment Lesson Plans that could be used. When I need science supplies I like to purchase from Home Science Tools. They have tons of individual and and kit supplies for single use and groups.

The Principles, Theories, and Precepts of Biology course is laced with QR-Codes which can be scanned with a smartphone or tablet to access videos to further explain a topic or show an experiment.

We downloaded this FREE QR Code Reader to my daughter’s phone so she can scan and watch right on her phone while she is working on the chapter. It’s an easy way to add a content rich enhancement to the program. Having the code right there means no links to follow or try to copy, no searching for relevant multi-media content, it is right there and easy to access.

Easy to Implement

One thing I really like about Paradigm’s curriculum is that they are all broken down into smaller bits. One large textbook can be so overwhelming! (As well as difficult to transport!) So each chapter is it’s own book and has it’s own corresponding activity book.

As well as being broken into small pieces, it is self contained, clear and concise. Student’s read the text, then do the corresponding activity book pages. No extra books, no extra materials. They even tell the student when to ask for the quizzes!

Vocabulary Rich

When it comes to science if you don’t know the terms, you don’t understand the material. This course is filled with important vocabulary terms.

Each chapter begins with a Vocabulary Box that defines all the important terms for that chapter. Having the terms clearly listed and readily defined makes it so much easier for students to learn and understand the terminology.
