Literature Based Homeschool History
Using historical fiction and living books is one of my favorite ways to teach history. While this hasn’t always been the best option for all of my children, it has been the most fun and enriching option.
Sonlight American History
Sonlight never disappoints! Every time I have used one of their curriculum options I am always impressed with the quality of the products and the amount of organization they bring to the table. Their History / Bible / Literature (HBL) programs are the foundation of their homeschool curriculum. They are available for all grades, from preschool through high school. Each HBL program includes a year’s worth of history, geography, Bible and all required books, all laid out in an amazingly organized Instructor’s Guide.
I have talked about Sonlight before in my review of their literature based homeschool science curriculum. One of the big things I love about these Sonlight Curriculum Options is the fact that you can open and go. (Literally in the same day!)
The Instructor’s Guide tells you exactly what to do each day for either a 4 or 5 day a week schedule. (You choose that when you order so you get the lesson plans you need.) It breaks down each week by day, and within each day by Bible, History & Geography, Read-Alouds, and Readers, laying out exactly what pages are to be read for each thing.
When I opened Sonlight’s History / Bible /Literature D: Intro of American History, Year 1 of 2 the reader in me was jumping up and down!
Can you believe all the amazing books they include? There’s around 30 of them!
Other Cool Resources Included in Sonlight’s American History Curriculum
- A Laminated, Foldable Map – Can I just say that I have never seen one like this! It “folds” into a manageable sized square and then opens up to almost the size of our kitchen table! My grandson couldn’t wait to get his hands on it and start showing me what he could label.
- Timeline Resources – Sonlight has paired up with one of my favorite homeschool companies – Home School in the Woods, to include a thick papered, spiral bound timeline book, and timeline figures (they are printed on sticker paper so your student can just peel and stick!). We have used so many of their products throughout our years of homeschooling and love their well thought out timeline resources. This is a great addition to this Sonlight curriculum!

FREE Homeschool Middle School World History Options
This is a collection of FREE Homeschool Middle School World History Options.
I like to be sure to cover World History in both middle school and high school, but I don’t want to use the same resources. It’s nice to mix it up with different styles of learning. Plus using different resources offers a wider range of topics covered, as well as the opportunity to go more (or less) in depth. I was able to find and use FREE Homeschool Middle School World History resources which help us to keep the cost down.
